Varna Zoo: The Secret Garden of the Sea Garden
Varna Zoo: A Secret Garden Shared with Nature
If you walk deep into the northern end of the Sea Garden, past the Pantheon and the winding flower beds, the city noise suddenly gives way to the sound of peacocks and rustling leaves. This is Varna Zoo (Зоопарк Варна)—a place that feels less like a modern attraction and more like a secret garden shared between the people of Varna and the animals.
A Gift from the Sea
The zoo’s history actually started with a sailor’s gift. In the late 1950s, the crew of the destroyer Georgi Dimitrov brought home a bear cub named Maxim. He was the pride of the fleet, but as he grew, he needed a real home. To accommodate Maxim, the city began building a sanctuary in the heart of the park.
- The Opening: When it officially opened in April 1961, it wasn’t just for bears. It quickly became a sanctuary for the citizens of the forest and the sea.
- A Rite of Passage: For generations of Varna residents, the zoo has been a rite of passage—the place where you had your first ice cream while watching the monkeys or felt the thrill of seeing a tiger up close for the first time.
Life in the Sea Garden
The zoo is famous for its lush, green layout. Because it’s integrated into the existing park, you walk under massive old trees that keep the paths cool even in the height of August.
Today, it’s home to over 60 species. You’ll find the big hitters like lions and tigers, but the soul of the zoo is in the smaller details: the pink flamingos wading in the ponds, the inquisitive camels, and the cheeky monkeys that always seem to be watching the visitors as much as we watch them. It also doubles as a rescue center, often taking in injured storks and owls from the surrounding Dobrudzha plains.
Local Lore: The “White Pelican” Luck
Among Varna locals, there’s a small bit of folklore about the zoo’s birds.
- The White Pelican Luck: It’s said that if you’re at the pond and a white pelican flaps its wings right as you walk by, you’ll have a smooth voyage for the rest of the year—a nod to Varna’s maritime roots.
- The Legendary “Zoo Grandfather”: Many older residents remember a keeper from decades ago who supposedly could talk to the wolves; children used to wait by the fence just to see if the wolves would answer him.
A Legacy of Nature
The zoo is located at the far end of the Sea Garden, near the Dolphinarium. It’s a perfect stop if you’re already walking the length of the park, offering a peaceful retreat into nature right in the heart of the city.
A Fresh Look for a Historic Haven
While the zoo proudly retains its nostalgic, mid-century charm, it has recently undergone significant renovations to bring its facilities into the 21st century. The city recognized the need to balance the preservation of this beloved historical sanctuary with modern standards of animal welfare.
- Upgraded Enclosures: Many of the habitats, particularly for the larger predators, have been redesigned to provide more space and safer, closer viewing areas for visitors.
- Preserving the Green Soul: Despite the upgrades, the core identity of the zoo as a shaded, lush retreat within the Sea Garden has been carefully maintained, ensuring it still feels like that same secret garden from 1961.
