Navigating Varna is straightforward once you know the local quirks. Here is everything you need to know about getting around by bus, taxi, and train.
1. The Iconic 409 Bus Line: A Tale of Two Companies
The 409 bus is the most important line for visitors, connecting Varna Airport to the City Center and the Golden Sands resort. However, it is operated by two different companies, and their tickets are not interchangeable.
- Blue & White Buses (City Transport): These are the official municipal buses.
- Official Timetable: You can track these buses in real-time and check the official schedule at varnatraffic.com.
- Ticketing: Buy tickets via the TicketVarna app (1 ticket per account) or the automated machines inside the bus.
- Price: Approx. €1.00 (60 min) / €1.30 (90 min).
- Validity: Need to transfer? These tickets are valid on all other blue city bus lines within the time limit.
- Other Colors (Private Company): You will often see buses in different colors (usually white or gold) running the same 409 route.
- Ticketing: Tickets are sold only by staff inside the bus (conductors).
- Payment: Cash only. No apps or machines.
- Validity: These tickets are only valid for that specific ride and cannot be used on the blue city buses.
2. Taxi Services: Know Your Price
Taxis are a good way to get around the city quickly. To ensure a fair experience, follow these local rules:
- The Golden Rule: Always agree on the price before departure.
- In Varna City: Stick to reputable firms like Triumf Taxi, Hippo Taxi, or Omega Trans. Download their mobile apps to see the fixed price before you ride. A typical city trip costs between €3.50 and €6.00.
- In Golden Sands: You will see private taxis parked in front of the hotels. These are generally okay to take, but since they don’t always use the standard city apps, you must confirm and agree on the total price with the driver before you get in.
- A Word of Caution: Be careful with “roaming” taxis that drive around Varna or within the resort and stop to call you in. These can be unbranded or “fake” taxis with much higher rates. It is always safer to call a taxi via an app, your reception or a dispatch number.
3. Varna Central Railway Station: Travel Further
The Varna Railway Station is an architectural gem located at the southern end of the city, just a short walk from the historic center.
- Destinations: This is your gateway to major cities like Sofia, Plovdiv, and Ruse.
- How to Buy: Tickets are available at the station counters or online via the official Bulgarian State Railways (BDZ) website.
- Access: The station is easily reached by bus lines 13, 20, and the 109.
4. Intercity Buslines
For long-distance travel across Bulgaria, many locals prefer private bus lines over the train. Companies like Biomet are highly regarded for their modern fleet, comfort, and reliability, especially for the route between Varna and Sofia.
