Varna is a city where history isn’t just kept in books; it’s carved into the stone of its facades. To truly understand the soul of Bulgaria’s “Sea Capital,” you have to walk the path between two iconic landmarks: Hotel Royal 1905 and Villa Burov.
The Legend of Atanas Burov
Atanas Burov (1875–1954) was the ultimate Bulgarian polymath: a Sorbonne-educated banker, a high-ranking diplomat, and a war hero who famously traded his tailored suit for a soldier’s uniform in 1912. As a fierce defender of democracy, he dreamed of a European Bulgaria. Though his life ended tragically in a communist prison, his spirit remains the cornerstone of Varna’s identity.
Hotel Royal 1905: A Merchant’s Dream
Tucked away in the Taliana district—Varna’s historic creative quarter—this hotel is a masterclass in French Art Nouveau.
- The History: Originally a simple inn, it was transformed in 1905 by a wealthy merchant who wanted to bring Parisian luxury to the Black Sea.
- The Look: Designed by the legendary Nikola Lazarov, the facade is a theatre of stone covered in “maskerons” (sculpted faces) and intricate balconies.
- The Rebirth: Recently restored into a boutique spa hotel, stepping inside feels like a time-traveler’s dream, complete with crystal chandeliers and period-accurate furniture.
Villa Burov: The Jewel of the Sea Garden
While the hotel was Burov’s business base, Villa Burov was his sanctuary. Perched on a cliff within the lush Sea Garden, this 1914 villa is one of the most romantic spots in the city.
- The Design: Its most striking features are the massive terraces designed to mimic the decks of a ship, offering a panoramic view of the Black Sea.
- The Current Life: Today, it houses a high-end restaurant where you can pair a world-class meal with the aristocratic atmosphere of the “Belle Époque.”
How to Get Around
Getting to these landmarks is easy, whether you are coming from the airport, the golden sands, or the city center.
1. The Iconic 409 Bus Line
The 409 bus is the lifeline of Varna. It connects Varna Airport, the city center (near the Cathedral), and the resorts like Golden Sands.
- To Hotel Royal: Get off at the “Center” or “Railway Station” stop. From there, it’s a charming 5-minute walk through the Taliana district. A single ticket costs approximately €1.00.
- To Villa Burov: Get off at the “Park Mart” stop or near the Dolphinarium and walk into the Sea Garden toward the coast.
2. Taxi & Ride-Hailing
Taxis are plentiful, but to avoid surprises, always use a reputable company (like Triumf Taxi or Hippo Taxi).
- Pro Tip: Use their mobile apps to see the fixed price before you ride. A trip within the city center usually costs between €3.50 and €6.00.
- Villa Burov Access: Taxis can drop you off at the entrance of the Sea Garden near the villa, making it the most convenient option for a late-night dinner.
3. On Foot
Varna is a walking city. The stroll from Hotel Royal 1905, through the pedestrian entrance of the Sea Garden, all the way to Villa Burov takes about 25–30 minutes. It’s the best way to soak in the coastal breeze and the historic architecture.
Local Tip: The Coffee Ritual
Don’t miss the Burov Café in front of the hotel. It’s a local rite of passage to sip an espresso right under the shadow of Burov’s bronze statue, watching the world go by in the very square that bears his name.
