Nestled in the greenery of the Sea Garden, just steps away from the Black Sea, you’ll find one of Varna’s most enduring landmarks: the Aquarium and Institute of Fisheries (Аквариум Варна). For over a century, this spot has offered a window into the underwater world of the Black Sea, inviting visitors of all ages to explore its quiet mysteries and diverse marine life.
A Vision from the Deep
The history of the Varna Aquarium dates back to the early 20th century. The idea for a marine biological station and public aquarium came from Prince Ferdinand I, a dedicated naturalist who wanted to turn Varna into a hub for marine science.
Construction started in 1904 and wrapped up in 1911 under architect Dabko Dabkov, a key figure in Varna’s architectural history. The building itself is a masterpiece, decorated with marine-themed reliefs, seashell motifs, and an elegant façade featuring dolphins and mythical sea creatures. While the Balkan Wars and World War I delayed its debut, the Aquarium finally opened to the public in 1932 as the first museum of its kind in Bulgaria.
The Living Sea Within
Inside, the aquarium showcases the hidden wonders of the Black Sea. The tanks house everything from shimmering mackerel to mysterious eels, along with various species from the world’s oceans.
It’s more than just a museum, though. The building is home to the Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture, where scientists study marine ecosystems and work to protect Bulgaria’s coastal heritage. For many locals, it’s a place of childhood memories—the first time seeing a seahorse or watching the hypnotic movement of a jellyfish.
Tales and Legends Beneath the Waves
Like any historic site, the Varna Aquarium has its share of local folklore. One legend tells of the “Sea King’s Treasure” hidden beneath the building. Local sailors used to speak of strange lights in the shallow waters, and some say the architects even found coin-shaped seashells during construction—seen by many as a blessing from the sea.
Another story mentions the “Mermaid of Varna,” who supposedly appears in the largest tank once every hundred years to remind us that the ocean is alive and watching. Even the staff sometimes joke about hearing faint singing coming from the tanks after the doors close for the night. Children also believe that if you drop a shell into the fountain at the entrance and make a wish, the fish will carry your secret to the deep.
A Legacy of the Sea
Today, the Varna Aquarium is a mix of scientific importance and nostalgia. It remains a bridge between our world and the life beneath the waves. As the sun sets over the Sea Garden and you hear the waves nearby, the building takes on a quiet magic, as if it’s breathing right along with the sea.
