What to do in Varna & How to get there

Varna — The Sea Capital of Bulgaria

Varna is Bulgaria’s third-largest city and the vibrant heart of the Black Sea coast. Blending ancient history, seaside charm, and modern culture, it’s a place where you can wander through Roman ruins in the morning, relax on the beach at noon, and enjoy open-air concerts by nightfall.

Known as “the Sea Capital of Bulgaria”, Varna is a city of sun, sea, and stories — perfect for both explorers and dreamers.

1. The Varna Cathedral

The city’s grand landmark, with its golden domes visible from everywhere. Step inside for beautiful icons, murals, and a peaceful atmosphere. You can climb the bell tower (in summer) for panoramic views of Varna.

2. The Archaeological Museum

Home of the world’s oldest processed gold, discovered in the Varna Necropolis (dated 4600–4200 BCE). The museum also showcases Thracian, Greek, Roman, and Byzantine artifacts — it’s a journey through 7,000 years of history.

3. The Sea Garden (Morska Gradina)

Varna’s pride — a vast coastal park filled with flowers, sculptures, cafés, and sea views. Walk under the trees, visit the Aquarium, the Dolphinarium, and the Naval Museum, or simply sit by the promenade and watch the ships pass.

4. The Dolphinarium

A fun family stop inside the Sea Garden, where dolphins perform impressive shows. It’s the only one of its kind in Bulgaria and a favorite for kids and adults alike.

5. The Roman Baths (Thermae)

The ruins of the ancient Roman Thermae of Odessos, dating back to the 2nd century AD, are among the largest in the Balkans. You can walk through the ancient arches and imagine life in the Roman seaside town of Odessos, Varna’s original name.

6. Aladzha Monastery (just outside Varna)

A medieval cave monastery carved into limestone cliffs, surrounded by forest. Explore the monk cells and chapel, then listen to the legends of hidden treasures and ghostly monks.

7. Varna Opera & Festival Complex

In summer, the city comes alive with cultural events — the Varna Summer International Music Festival, the Ballet Festival, and open-air concerts in the Sea Garden. Check schedules if you love live music and art.

8. Shopping & Cafés

Wander along Knyaz Boris I Blvd, Varna’s main pedestrian street, lined with boutiques, gelato shops, and local fashion. For big malls, visit Grand Mall Varna or Delta Planet Mall.

Stop for coffee or ice cream near the Sea Garden — Varna’s café culture is relaxed and lively.

9. The Seaside Promenade

The lower level of the Sea Garden runs along the water with beach bars, seafood restaurants, and great sunset views. Walk from the central beach to the Fishermen’s Pier — the sound of the waves is unforgettable.

10. Varna Aquarium

Located near the Sea Garden’s entrance. The Aquarium showcases marine life from the Black Sea.

11. Naval Museum

The Naval Museum tells the story of Bulgaria’s maritime heritage.

12. Bulgarian - Sovjet Friendship Monument

Built to celebrate the close ties between Bulgaria and the Soviet Union during the communist period.

13. The Stone Forest

Just a few kilometers west of Varna, Bulgaria’s “Sea Capital,” lies one of Europe’s most enigmatic natural wonders — the Stone Forest known locally as the Pobiti Kamani.

14. Botanic Garden Balchik

Discover the breathtaking Balchik Botanic Garden, where exotic plants, historic architecture, and seaside views create an unforgettable escape.

15. Nessebar

Step into the enchanting town of Nessebar, where cobblestone streets, ancient ruins, and seaside charm await at every turn.
