Sea Garden Varna
Stretching gracefully along Varna’s coastline, the Sea Garden (Morska gradina) is not merely a park — it is the heart and soul of the city, a living symbol of Varna’s love affair with the Black Sea. Shaded by ancient trees and kissed by the sea breeze, it is a place where history, art, and legend intertwine beneath the whispering leaves.

A Garden Born from Vision
The story of the Sea Garden begins in the late 19th century, when Varna was transforming from a quiet provincial town into Bulgaria’s “Sea Capital.” In 1881, the city’s mayor, Mihail Koloni, envisioned creating a grand seaside park worthy of Europe’s great coastal promenades. His dream was ambitious — to turn the sandy, windswept dunes outside the city into a lush public garden.
To bring this vision to life, the city invited Anton Novák, a renowned Czech landscape architect who had worked on the parks of Schönbrunn and Belvedere in Vienna. Novák arrived in Varna in 1894 and immediately fell in love with the site. Under his guidance, the barren shore was transformed into a flourishing green paradise — with winding alleys, exotic plants, fountains, and sculptures that blended nature with art.
Over the next decades, the park expanded, incorporating rose gardens, terraces, monuments, and open-air stages. By the early 20th century, the Sea Garden had become a cultural centerpiece — home to concerts, festivals, and the laughter of generations of Varna’s families.

A Living Museum by the Sea
Walking through the Sea Garden today is like walking through time. You pass the Pantheon of the Fallen Soldiers, the Alley of the Cosmonauts, the Naval Museum, and the charming Dolphinarium — each corner carrying a memory of Varna’s proud maritime spirit. The air smells of pine, sea salt, and blooming flowers, while the sound of waves mingles with music from street performers and cafés.
The Sea Garden is not only a park — it is a cultural landmark, a place where every Varna resident has a story to tell: the first kiss, a childhood game, a concert under the stars, or a quiet moment watching the ships fade into the horizon.

Tales and Legends of the Sea Garden
Over the decades, the Sea Garden has grown its own mythology — gentle tales, urban legends, and whispers of romance and mystery that add to its charm.
One of the most beloved legends tells of the Sea Nymph of Varna — a spirit said to appear at dawn, dancing on the waves near the garden’s shore. Locals say she fell in love with a young gardener who tended the park’s flowers. When he died in a storm at sea, her tears turned into pearls scattered along the sand. Even today, some claim to see her reflection on calm mornings, gazing toward the city that stole her heart.
Another tale speaks of the Whispering Fountain near the central alley. Lovers believe that if they throw a coin into its waters and whisper their wish to the sea breeze, the waves will carry their secret to the horizon — and one day, it will return fulfilled.
There are also stories of the old trees said to be enchanted. Some date back more than a century, and it is said that if you place your hand on their trunks and listen closely, you can hear the distant echoes of laughter, music, and the rustling steps of all those who have ever walked beneath their branches.

The Soul of Varna
For Varna’s people, the Sea Garden is more than a park — it is a sanctuary. It is where the city comes to breathe, to dream, to remember. Artists come for inspiration, lovers for solitude, children for play. In summer, its alleys are filled with music, festivals, and color; in winter, it sleeps quietly beneath the sea mists, waiting for spring to bring it back to life.
From sunrise walks to moonlit strolls, from history to legend, the Sea Garden remains Varna’s most timeless treasure — a place where the land, the sea, and the human heart meet in perfect harmony.
